Best open-source bitmap editor
4.0

written about 6 years ago

I've been using GIMP for years and am very happy with it, it can edit and analyze photos, create pixel art, apply effects, convert formats, there is a lot of useful plugins as well. It has some minor issues, such as lower performance with some effects, inability of plugins to modify the program itself which makes it lack some advanced features, such as a tiling canvas... but there are workarounds for most of these. I suppose the active community will make the program even better in the future. Thank you for this great editor.

Plays the same as Quake III. The assets and maps are free and very well made.

I haven't finished the game yet, but already had much fun. The world in extremely detailed among free games, I found myself lost in the story which is very well written. I would just appreciate a bit more polished graphics and sound.

An example of excellent software

Easy to use, yet powerful. Inkscape has been helping me make vector graphics for years, be it games, UML diagrams or figures for my theses. I love it. The only improvement I could think of would be animation support.

The ultimate kernel

I don't think anyone here needs to hear the epic story behind Linux and how elegant, stable and secure it is nowadays. Shame it still hasn't become the majority kernel on desktop. I hope it does soon.

Excellent project

GCC powers our free software and we owe a lot to it. It's always my first choice for compiling C/C++. There's many useful options, such as optimizations, different compilation stages, warning messages etc. The only problem I can remember was a missing support for some new advanced C++ header from the standard lib, but that's basically it. Can't even remember facing any bugs. Awesome job here.

Not as extensive as Minecraft, but it's getting there. Android port worked nicely for me.

We owe a lot to DOSBox

It played all my games smoothly, brought back the nostalgia. There are a lot of configurable options, including nice upscaled rendering with clever algorithms. I only miss save/load machine state feature.

One of the best open-source remakes...

As a contributor I tested OpenMW a lot. It's great, fully playable and in many areas already more advanced than the vanilla engine. The community is awesome. As if this wasn't enough, it also comes with a world editor and recently also a multiplayer mod.

I used it multiple times, would definitely recommend to beginners in game dev, or even advanced developers for simple games.
