I am still new at git and at some point got so confused and frustrated that I ended up deleting the master branch and then copying/renaming another branch as master. I expect it broke then.

Yes, if you rebase or recreate a repository, this will break Ohloh's updates.
I started a clean clone of this repository, which should clear up the issue. I'll keep an eye on it today.
