Message from the owner(s) Rybena, is the social Java project of DFJUG – www.dfjug.org with support of CTS Institute – www.cts.org.br. Is a J2ME program that transforms spoken words to deaf sigh language transmitting them to mobiles. Rybena is a Xavante word for "communication". Xavante is a ... [More] Brazilian tribe in the state of Mato Grosso. See more details at www.rybena.org.br The JavaS program (Java Social), showed that a large proportion of the deaf population in Brasilia (and other Brazilian Federal District cities) use mobile phones for communication through the exchange of SMS messages. This service presents many difficulties, among them the uncertainty of the arrival of messages to the destination and delays of up to 24 hours. For this reason, JavaS decided to develop a J2ME communication system, to allow better written bidirectional communication. Because it was detected that about half the region's deaf population is also illiterate and thus would not have access to the chat application, we decided to include LIBRAS (Brazilian Sign Language) in the communication language, since it is used by about 60% of the deaf community.
