Solr is awesome. It solved a lot of problem which was being faced earlier by my team.
It has a very easy-to-configure setup.Amazingly fast and yields the best results. Some of the features are great for our users like faceting and many more.
The speed at which it fetches the results is good.We have tried this engine with more than several million documents and it works wonder.
I truly recommend this project for medium-large sized websites.
Solr is great and very easy to get running with. It's hands-down the easiest way to get good full-text searching of a dataset.
However!! By default, it is a RAM hog. If you're running in a constrained environment (like a VPS), then you'll have to devote a lot of effort to optimizing and tweaking in order to get decent performance. Otherwise, don't be surprised when Solr grabs all your RAM and forces everything else into swap space.
