The instance variable inference happened too late; it needs to happen *before* the instance size is determined. 'In real life' this should only be a performance and memory issue, but since we've yet to implement support for instance variables not known at compile time, this bug in fact caused segmentation faults as one tries to assign to slots in the object that have not been allocated
