Mondo is a program quite like the commercial Norton Ghost. It will (or should) make an image of your hard drive, which can then be saved in a variety of formats - for example, it's possible to burn it to a bootable DVD/CD.

It can do this even from a live and running system - something that other 'ghost' programs don't seem to be able to manage. The beauty of Mondo is that if your system becomes messed up, or even totally trashed, you can boot the DVD/CD and get the whole computer *exactly* back to where it was when you last backed up - in a matter of minutes, with no tedious messing about to restore settings, reinstall packages, etc.

So far so good.

When Mondo works, it's simply superb, and there's nothing else that can even touch it.

The problem is, it seems to work less often these days. I used to rely on Mondo a lot, but I'm now finding that there seem to be too many operating systems and hardware setups that Mondo just can't deal with.

If you're looking for the ultimate backup tool, Mondo is absolutely the first place to look - but don't be overly surprised if you find it won't work with your particular setup.
