Project Summary

libecbufr is a C API for the BUFR data format. It is released by Environment Canada under the LGPLv3.

Utility programs to decode and encode BUFR messages to and from human-readable ASCII are included in the package.

BUFR stands for Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data. This format was created and is maintained by the World Meteorological Organization, a UN organization that is mandated, among other things, to standardise worldwide meteorological observation practices, reporting and data representation.

libecbufr was created by the Meteorological Service of Canada to meet internal requirements. It was open-sourced in 2009. The code is actively maintained and used within the MSC, although outwardly there may appear to be periods of relative inactivity.
