Networking and firewall are very important aspects of any modern N-tier application. We always wanted to have network support as part of the Cloud application setup, and now, Neutron opens the door for such an automation process. There are two ways ... [More] for Cloud applications to consume OpenStack network features. One way is static - the Openstack administrator can define vLans, security groups, floating IPs and such using Horizon, and later the application VMs can be defined to be bound to these network objects. The other path, the one we are now taking, is a programmatic dynamic path. In this approach, the network configuration is part of the orchestration plan (what we call a recipe), and the orchestrator (Cloudify) creates the network objects according to the application needs and connects the provisioned VMs to the security groups and virtual networks, so the application is installed with all of its network infrastructure. We defined several key user stories to support: Defining network templates in Cloudify config files and create instances through an API as part of the automated application setup Define security group rules and network template names to consume in the Cloudify recipe, and then create them dynamically and bind them to the VM Add an API to Cloudify, so recipes can dynamically bind / unbind floating IPs to a VM during setup, scale or auto-heal processes These user stories are natural additions to Cloudify’s compute and storage templates. The same ideas of abstraction remain - the specifics of networking configurations are in the specific Openstack configuration file of Cloudify. The recipe remains cloud neutral and only points to template names. We plan to develop these additions until the end of November and release them with the December 2.7 release.
