Audacity is really a very versatile tool for audiophiles. It allow you to edit and remake audio files. You can also record audio directly from your soundcard and mic. There are large number of nice plugins available to customize it.
this is my grunt work audio editor - it beats out my adobe soundbooth and cakewalk for simple editing on the fly and it is small enough to fly anywhere.
Make sure you load the LAME and PLUG-INS it makes use in other programs trouble free

This is the tool for most people when they want to edit or record audio. I am using it and it's great, intuitive, doesn't eat much memory, even has some advanced effects and analysis tools. I once had audacity repeatedly crashing on Windows during recording, but that was a while ago now and I suppose it's been fixed.
From simple to multiple track complex editing, Audacity is a powerful audio tool. Even for the non-experienced audio technician, Audacity is easy to record, edit, and mix audio tracks in a timeline. The sky is the limit with Audacity; it all depends on your motivation and creativity.
