MetaIO is a tagged file format for images and the meta data needed to interpret them as medical images: voxel spacing, N-dimension images, image orientation in physical space, etc.
MetaIO began in 1996 to address the growing complexity and inflexibility of medical image formats that were available at that time. MetaIO has maintained backward compatibility since its initial public release in 2000 as part of the Insight Toolkit (ITK, http://www.itk.org). MetaIO is used for the majority of tests and examples in the ITK framework. MetaIO is also available in the Visualization Toolkit (VTK, http://www.vtk.org) and Slicer (http://slicer.org) and numerous other toolkits and applications.
