Tags improvements
I've seen many projects using bunches of unnecessary (and too short, and thus ambiguous) tags, such as: vc vcs version_control scm
as can be found in Subversion, Mercurial, Darcs, Monotone...
In fact all the 4 tags refer to the only concept of version_control
(Version Control, Version Control System, Source Code Management).
I think this kind of redundancy only lessens the usefulness of the tag system and we should stick to one form (of the 4 above, I'd personally use the longer and more clear), but of course people adding new projects won't know what the consensus is, so there can be work in that area.
E.G. add a feature to suggest version_control
when vcs
is used and suggests 3-or-4 longer and more clear tags in the case vc
is used.

Yes, I agree, and it's a bit annoying to see such disorganization in the tags.
We do have some administrative tools that allow us to make batch changes to tags -- for instance, replacing 'vc' with 'version_control' everywhere -- and we occasionally get motivated to make such cleanups.
I had hoped that our fancy-pants tag editing page would make it easier to choose the right tags for a project, but it actually seems to just encourage people to add as many tags as possible. You're right that there are some changes we might make to improve this, like
- Warn the user if a tag is unique (or very rare) on Ohloh
- Check for similar tags that differ only by a single letter or underscore, and recommend the most common form
Suggesting 'version_control' in place of 'vcs' might be trickier, since it implies that we have a table of synonyms -- any ideas how this table might be created?
Mhh... in the anyone is in full controll, there are UNDOs as a safety measure
approach that drives almost everything in Ohloh having a user-contributed table of tag synonyms seems a little risky to me.
OTOH a user-managed synonims table would definitely make sense if it was based on a consensus
... needing the approval of 2+ users to change an entry of that table for example (maybe something like the vote system
used, IMHO very successfully, by musicbrainz.org).
