Is open source dying, or are Ohloh statistics broken?

Given the Ohloh statistics, since early 2009 the number of contributors to open source projects is dramatically falling:

Maybe it caught on, and then a lot of developers stopped hearing (caring) about it. Or it could be the way the site collects statics (for instance what if i moved my project to different hosting and restarted the version control.)

It's quite possibly related to the way that statistics are collected. Several projects that I'd been involved with had problems for various reasons. In one case, we reorganized the SVN repository and hadn't updated the enlistments here, and in another we moved to another SCM that isn't supported by Ohloh at all (but we've got a bridge in place via Git now).

Are these things universal? Hardly, but it's very easy to run into small issues and to forget to update here. That means that it is expected for there to be a steady decrease in the number of active contributors, just through simple bit-rot.

Hi!

The lines show the count of projects with at least one line of code changed in a month. (check values and not %)

https://www.ohloh.net/languages/compare?commit=Update&l0=c&l1=cpp&l2=java&l3=javascript&l4=perl&l5=php&l6=python&l7=ruby&l8=-1&measure=projects

I'd be curious to have more data mining/analysis on this. Perhaps there is more convergence/collaboration after a period of effervescence/experimentation?

Do you think the data is accurate/complete?
What are your theories on what is happening?

Best regards,

M ;-)
