feedback and bugs

Hi,
first congratulations for the ohloh website.
Now that said here are few critics :

  • i've ranked by mistake a project where i'm a contributor, is this normal behavior ? I think i should not be able to do that ...
  • something must be broken in ranking because on the same project i have rank 1 with 1450 commits and another contributor has rank 7 with only 300 commits.
  • 3 clauses BSD licence does not seem to be recognized in source files

That's all for now, have fun !

Thanks for your kind words and for using Ohloh. Some responses to your questions:

  • We don't try to prevent people from rating or ranking their own projects.
  • It looks like your ranking just hasn't updated yet. Rankings are updated once a day. If there's still a problem tomorrow, then it's something we should investigate.
  • Our license parser looks for specific text in the licenses. BSD licenses are often edited to remove all references to the University of California. Is that the case here, perhaps? If not, I'll dig into it.

Thanks for the feedback!

Ok thanks for the quick reply.

  • About the project ranking, could i remove the rank i did by mistake then ?
  • i am member since the 16th an still at rank 1 and invited a friend yesterday who is since rank 7. Check the pre make kit project if you want to compare the both accounts.
  • Well if you use the BSD license you put your name into the copyright, not Berkeley. And the original Berkeleylicense has 4 clause but 2 and 3 also exist and are still BSD licenses.

Greetings,
Damien

For more information about BSD license you can see the following link :
http://www.opensource.net/licenses/bsd-license.php

It could be identified by the first two clauses, you could even look for the static part of the third to check if this is a 2 or 3 clauses version of the license.

Hope it helps,
Damien

Hey Damien,

I removed the ratings you added to projects 6645, 6676, both of which you'd contributed to. Feel free to go back and rate one or both if you like.

For kudo rank, what matters is when people stacked the projects to which you contributed and when you received kudos. If your friend received a kudo prior to you getting yours, that would explain the difference. Once the update is done, you will likely be rank 7 or higher.

Re: the BSD license. It looks like we should be recognizing this as a BSD-template license or BSD-like. We'll take a look at this at some point since this is what opensource.org suggests.

Hi Andy,
the second projet was rated for testing purpose before writing the initial post, so removing ranking for both is fine for me :)

About the kudo ran of my friend, it was 7 before he creates his account and without any kudos. Right after the creation he was rank 1 and a bit later he was back at 7. Weird, isn't it ?

Original BSD licencse is rarely used lately because the copyright owner is Berkeley, most of the BSD projects are using 3 clause license. Check the netbsd project which is a direct Berkeley net tape descendant and you'll see that ohloh only find 45 BSD licensed files (EDIT: i just noticed that netbsd also have enlistment problems that maybe explain the few licenses found). Anyway, thanks for the upcoming parser update :)

A last thing i've discovered recently about the openbsd project enlistment : it looks like the ohloh site is doing a test on the cvs server with the ls command. This fails on many servers due to security measures i think, maybe you could provide a checkbox to bypass this test.
EDIT: the freebsd and netbsd projects also seems to have failure when getting the src cvs module.

Thanks,
Damien
