I've been trying out the download service - thanks for providing it.
I'd like to provide an experience to our users that is integrated with my project's website. For this reason, I prevent sites like versiontracker (or, much worse, softpedia) from directly linking to the download (while presenting their own ads). If they arrive directly from such a site, I redirect the user back to the download page before letting them start the actual download. During the download, I show my own page.
Ohloh is a developer-level tool and not one that would be of interest to the user. For this reason, I would like to embed the download without much fuzz. I'm happy to show the advertisement to support Ohloh's service.
I can achieve most of this using an iframe from my site and your excellent CSS-based download customizations, but what I need from Ohloh is the option to do an HTTP redirect depending on the URL referrer. Something like only accept downloads from URL x
, redirect back to URL y otherwise.
I hope this doesn't sound too obscure. The general desire to provide a streamlined, user-level download experience should be fairly universal.
PS.: having read up on the Amazon Cloudfront API, having .htaccess/RewriteRule-like restrictions on the final downloads seems to be far from straightforward for a client service.
Hi David,
If I'm following all of this correctly, it does sound like something we could work out. We're very interested in making the download service as useful and accessible possible.
However, most of the Ohloh team will be taking some time off during the next week, so there's not going to be a lot of forward progress :-). Ping us again via email after the holidays, and we'll see what we can put together.
Thanks,
Robin
Hi Robin,
I sent you an e-mail to a gmail address of yours that I found somewhere on the web. If you didn't get that, get in touch with your address and we can sort this out.
Best
David
