Well - the forks may not be entirly nice but they happen.
For example I've forked gnio (https://www.ohloh.net/projects/gnio) and developed my branch writing some parts from scratch (however many have ramain) - http://github.com/uzytkownik/gnio/tree

The best solution would be to recognise forks. It might works for example for Linux Kernel.
Oh, I forked a LOT of things… to reference the other projects would certainly be interesting.
Well - I also thought about not creating the full project with separate name etc.
Ah. In my cases, these are fully separate projects, have been since more than 6 years.
