The projects used for Desktop

Ubuntu Ubuntu
Community rating:

Notes:
I have been using Linux for about 3 years. I started with Fedora, but tried Ubuntu with version 6.10 and have chosen it over other distros. Now using 8.04 and 8.10.
Capistrano Capistrano
Community rating:

Notes:
A script driven deployment tool designed for use with Rails web applications. A single command can install a production server release on a cluster of servers. Way cool.
GIMP GIMP
Community rating:

Notes:
Whenever you need to edit a .gif or a .jpg file, Gimp is your best choice on Linux. I haven't begun to understand all of the features, so I use only a small subset, but it does what I want it to do.
nginx nginx
Community rating:

Notes:
Used by my hosting server rather that Apache.
RSpec RSpec
Community rating:

Notes:
Just now investigation RSpec and Behavior-Driven-Development. Looks intriguing.
sudo sudo
Community rating:

Notes:
Part of the Ubuntu Linux environment for password management. Better than operating as super-user all the time, even on a single-user desktop.
MySQL MySQL
Community rating:
4

Notes:
My choice for a generic database server. It works well, is simple to use. I recommend the for-fee Navicat tool as a MySQL browser.
GNU Make GNU Make
Community rating:
4

Notes:
Absolutely necessary if you are intent on building anything from source.
Rake Rake
Community rating:

Notes:
Think make for Ruby. Installed as a GEM.
Git Git
Community rating:
4

Notes:
The Ruby community is moving to Git, so I better move with them. I am looking for a good Git GUI browser, but have not yet found one. Any suggestions are welcome.
