We rolled out an update that dramatically improves the responsiveness and speed using the Cloud Dashboard. This should help you get your work done faster than ever. More secure phpMyAdmin installations, with easier access from the MODX Cloud Dashboard. We now suggest a generated install location with access button and URL reference in the Cloud edit view. To help offer solutions, we added complete documentation related to sending email with cloud and reaching the inbox. See the new email deliverability documentation and get your emails delivered. Updated documentation on Web Rules covers things like redirecting site visitors to your SSL site and doing things as recommended by Google to increase page performance (and search rank, too). If you use the command line, we’ve added the nano text editor to all MODX Clouds for easy, lightweight editing via SSH, as a user-friendly alternative to Vim. For those on the original legacy account plans, you can now access all the statements directly from the Dashboard as expected. And finally, of interest to site builders and developers, we’ve made the following PHP updates including 5.4.40, 5.4.41 and 5.4.42. Prepare for PHP 5.6 Speaking of PHP, but we wanted to let you know that in the coming weeks, MODX Cloud will upgrade PHP to 5.6.x and nginx to 1.8.x, corresponding with PHP 5.4.x coming to its end of support. Cloud account holders will receive a notice via email as well. We will make a test server available for users that wish to test the build in Cloud. We have tested PHP 5.6 with MODX Revolution in Cloud, and all things function normally. We do not expect that MODX Revolution installations will have any issues, however, we do encourage you to investigate the differences between PHP 5.4 and 5.6 as it may relate to custom code built for your site. Learn more about the differences between PHP 5.4 and 5.5, and PHP 5.5 and 5.6. If you are no longer in contact with your web developer, you may wish to ask about this from a MODX Professional or the MODX Services team to discuss an audit for your site. Stay Tuned for More Stay tuned over the next days and weeks to hear about great changes to make MODX Cloud better for you and for your customers. [Less]

Photo: Aerial view of Munchen: Marienplatz, New Town Hall and Frauenkirche We're proud to announce that the fourth, official MODXpo will take place on November 21 and 22 in Munich, Germany. The previous official MODXpo was hosted in November ... [More] 2013 in Cologne, Germany. After a year hiatus (though not without an awesome MODX conference in between), web designer and MODX Ambassador, Benjamin Davis, has taken the reins as chief organizer for the next official MODXpo with major help from the MODX Munich Meetup Group and other MODX Ambassadors. MODXpo is an international conference for people who build websites with, and use MODX. Sessions include presentations and workshops for both a beginner and seasoned pro. Everyone who attends a MODXpo comes away filled with new perspectives for solving business or clients' problems. There's nothing like it. Host Sponsors Kochan & Partner The catalyst for MODXpo 2015 was the Munich-based agency, and MODX fans, Kochan & Partner. They graciously offered to host the event in their 200 person capacity hall. Kochan & Partner have been long-time MODX users and host the local MODX meetups in Munich. Ideas and Voices No conference would be complete without interesting topics and speakers. The organizers would like as much input as possible for shaping MODXpo 2015 into the best conference it can be. The organizing team is seeking your ideas on interesting talks and are looking for proposals from anyone in the MODX community who is interested in sharing some of how they work. Submit your topic ideas. Even if you've never spoken at an event before but have solved some problems in an interesting way for your business, your clients or just built something cool. That's all you need to start building your talk. Apply to speak at MODXpo 2015. Call for Sponsors Of course an event of this size cannot rely only on a single host sponsor, as nice as the team at Kochan & Partner are. We'd like to partner with some awesome organizations who are looking to support the MODX event or put their brand in front of the MODX community at large. Contact the MODXpo 2015 team to ask about becoming a sponsor partner Save the Date and Bookmark the Website If you're looking to dig deep into MODX, meet some smart, interesting and diverse web designers and developers from all over the world, mark Novemer 21 and 22, 2015 in your calendar for MODXpo 2015. Stay up to date on what's happening with MODXpo 2015 at the event website. We hope to see you in Munich. [Less]

I've been using Vim for about 2 years now, mostly because I can't figure out how to exit it.— I Am Devloper (@iamdevloper) February 17, 2014 Yes, it’s been some time since our last MODX Cloud update (we have stopped writing these in ... [More] Vim) but we’ve been very busy improving the underlying technology in Cloud. Some what’s new in Cloud include implementing SPDY, updating MODX, the server stack, and now you can download backups and Snapshots in one click. Here are the highlights of changes in the recent months: Latest versions of MODX Revolution, 2.3.3 and 2.2.16 System updates to: PHP (5.4.34) Nginx (1.6.2) MySQL (Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.6.21-70.0, for Linux) Added nano command line editor so you no longer need to use vim Maintenance and security updates including patches againsr major security vulnerabilities including GHOST and Heartbleed New: download Snapshots and Backups in one click (more on this very soon) Added SPDY to the MODX Cloud Dashboard for dramatically improved performance Customers running SSL can enable SPDY (upon request) to their Clouds Continued improvements to the MODX Cloud User Guide Streamlined and dramatically simpler sign-up form for new users—if you’re referring customers or colleagues this is a big deal Speaking of Referrals… By design, MODX Cloud serves a specific purpose as a MODX-focused hosting platform loved by site builders and end users alike. End users find it refreshing to own their own content updates without having to get IT involved—if you’ve ever been in a larger organization you probably have experienced something similar. However, site builders and agencies have told us they really missed the reseller plans offered by many web hosts. We listened, and starting today, we’re accepting applications for the pilot launch of our referral program with revenue sharing for MODX Cloud. See the application page and let us know what you think. Stay tuned over the next days and weeks to hear about great changes to make MODX Cloud better for you and your customers. [Less]

MODX co-founder, Jason Coward, shares his ideas for MODX-next that embraces contemporary development principles in order to build a more flexible foundation. This is the part one of a three part series on laying the groundwork for a truly modern CMS. ... [More] A CMS that not only continues to solve real business problems but will allow developers to use and contribute to using the best practices PHP development has to offer. His article doesn't touch on interface or user experience for end users but it's not being ignored. He's focusing first on the principles of architecture that will make it easier for everyone who uses MODX to have the creative freedom not only for site design but for every part of MODX. MODX’s Core Promise Is Freedom For years MODX has virtually owned “Creative Freedom”. If you can prototype how a website should work and look, MODX can power it—without question. It doesn’t impose design or structural limitations, empowering you ... [More] with the freedom to create exactly what you wish, without compromising, making excuses, or hacking the core. But there is an area where MODX has failed to deliver on its promise of freedom. It’s Time to Make MODX Accessible From its first release in 2005 (yes we’ve been around for 10 years), you could always power first-class accessible websites with MODX. I’d argue there’s still no better platform for that even today. But for people who rely on assistive technologies, building in MODX has been marginal, and not a good user experience. For example, try surfing the web with your eyes closed while someone reads the page to you, and you try to tab to the right links. What if you misplace your eyeglasses and need to enlarge your fonts 2- to 3-times their normal size? Or, crank down the contrast and brightness on your monitor, and only use your thumb on your non-dominant hand. For many users, there is effectively no alternate way to experience the web. Accessibility is for everyone and it’s time to make accessibility a top-priority in MODX. A Big Head Start Thanks to Ohio State A huge, huge “thanks!” goes to The Ohio State University. They made this initiative possible by providing the funds to start the effort to bring MODX to everyone. MODX is a key platform for University Communications, and they faced a tough choice: stop building new projects with it, or somehow make it accessible. When they reached out to us we enthusiastically started a dialog that brought us to where we are today. MODX has a lot of traction on campus. For site administrators and content creators, the Manager interface is logical, intuitive, and simple to use. But there are a number of staff on campus who rely on assistive technologies, such as screen readers, or who have other vision impairments or need access by using the keyboard alone because of a motor disability. To this point, MODX hasn’t been a practical solution for them. But Ohio State and others in the accessibility community are working with the MODX team over the next few months to help guide changes to the Manager interfaces so that they can be used effectively by everyone, including our staff with disabilities. Ken PetriDirector, Ohio State Web Accessibility Center There’s a tremendous amount of planning and research that has already taken place over the last few months. We’ve started prototyping new functionality and even fixing things. But taking it to every corner of the ExtJS Manager is a massive project, that to be effective requires a considerable learning curve by experienced MODX developers. Doing the Right Thing Making the MODX Manager accessible is without question the right thing to do. By making the Manager accessible, users that rely on assistive technologies will get to experience the creative freedom for which MODX is known. By supporting this effort you’ll be supporting people who use assistive technologies. A Better Manager Experience for Everyone Not only will an accessible manager allow more people to use MODX, all users will benefit from improved, more consistent UX and a host of benefits including vastly improved keyboard navigation and other enhancements. Additionally, there should be a new source of people to help build and maintain sites in MODX, too. Get Involved Together we can make a difference! We need your help to complete this major initiative. We’ve already made great headway and started retrofitting the MODX Manager for accessibility—we know it will be a first class citizen in the accessible software world. This not only solves a very real problem today, but it also paves the way to set guidelines for future MODX releases and development. So please visit the MODX Accessibility site and donate whatever you can towards this effort to raise $50,000. We look forward to bringing this to the MODX Manager and everyone, soon! PS: Our friend Jeroen Kenters has created a video showcasing this important initiative. Learn More About the Accessibility Project and Donate Today Go to A11y.modx.com [Less]

Late last week we discovered a security vulnerability that could have potentially allowed an attacker to use a malicious PHP script to access and view MySQL passwords stored on the MODX Cloud platforms. We found no evidence of intrusion or access of ... [More] this information. These passwords are the passwords that are used to connect your website software (MODX or WordPress). No account information or credit card information is stored on our platforms. We have closed this security vulnerability and audited for any similar issues. To ensure the security and to protect your websites we have regenerated new passwords and updated your software and MySQL databases. If you are using MODX or WordPress and no other scripts requiring a connection to the database you will not need to take any action. The new database password will be available for review in the Dashboard. If you are using software or scripts that connect directly to the database and are outside MODX or WordPress, you will need to manually update the password.
