Project Summary

This project provides a free java lib for easily converting between Chinese characters (汉字) and their phonetic symbols, i.e., Pinyin (拼音). Currently we focus on Hanyu Pinyin which is used for mandarin in mainland of China, while other schemes such as Tongyong Pinyin and Cantonese Pinyin may be considered later.

Main features:

Easy APIs for conversion
Both simplified and traditional Chinese characters (in Unicode 4.0 BMP)
Supports toned Pinyin symbols and numbered Pinyin format.
Aims to provide standard results in future (to be verified with standard dictionaries, not finished yet)
Free software license (CDDL) for commercial use

JPinyin has been added to Softpedia's database of software programs for Mac OS. It has been tested in the Softpedia labs using several industry-leading security solutions and found to be completely clean of adware/spyware components.
Details here.
