Calling all Inkscape artists! It's time to enter our traditional About Screen Contest to celebrate the upcoming release of Inkscape version 1.1!
We're looking forward to your submissions!
With our 1.0.2 release just out the door, we're excited
... [More]
about preparing for our next big release in the spring.
The project contributors have been collaborating on refining things and on adding a wealth of new features for users to take advantage of in their workflow and creative process.
Among the most notable changes will be a Welcome dialog, where you can select a theme and a new document size or file to open, along with a Commands palette that opens with the "?" key; it allows users to search and use many functions without having to use a keyboard shortcut or go through the menus.
The very early release notes are evolving in Inkscape's Wiki.
If you're an Inkscape user, consider creating an About Screen image for Inkscape 1.1! Show off what the new version can do using your own artistic interpretation. You can submit your entry for the Inkscape 1.1 About Screen Contest from January 24, 2021, through to February 21, 2021. From there, the community will vote on all contest entries, and then project contributors will cast their votes to select a winner from the five top-voted submissions. The winner will be announced in early March 2021 and their work will be featured within the 1.1 version of the program as the About Screen.
If you would like to participate in the contest, please see full instructions here.
You can follow submissions by the community in this gallery.

Stability and bug fixes are the main focus of the Inkscape 1.0.2 release, including a packaging update for macOS that improves performance over the last release. This release provides fixes for many crashes in general, so updating will provide a

smoother experience in Inkscape overall. Inkscape 1.1 alpha will be released along with version 1.0.2, so testers can get their hands on the upcoming major version early.
Built with the power of a team of mostly volunteers, this open source vector editor represents the work of many hearts and hands from around the world, ensuring that Inkscape remains available free for everyone to download and enjoy.
Inkscape 1.0.2
macOS packaging
Inkscape's packaging has been updated for macOS, which enables better performance and includes icons appearing correctly and PDF export producing printable PDF files. The macOS version of Inkscape 1.0.2 is faster than 1.0.1, however, project developers are continuing to improve the macOS version for future releases.
Bug Fixes
Inkscape's Eraser Tool works once again, which will please every user! Gone are the red lines. Welcome, once again, to being able to draw and erase freely!
Crafters and makers seeking to frame and shape text will no longer need to rely on workarounds, to use text in Boolean operations, or when offsetting text. This means that if users have been holding out with 0.92.5 because of this, they'll find the functionality restored in 1.0.2. Older tutorials will once again be helpful for users seeking to learn how to wrangle text in Inkscape.
Features
Two new features made the cut:
It is now possible to deactivate the zoom function when clicking with the middle mouse button.
Zoom with middle mouse click option in the Preferences
You can now prevent accidental Canvas rotation, either temporarily for a document, or for all new Inkscape windows.
Option to lock the rotation for new documents in the Preferences

The new Commands palette will open by using the "?" key, allowing users to search and click on many functions without worrying about keyboard shortcuts or menus.
Additionally, when it comes to finding and setting preferences, there's a new search function that will speed up the process.
Artists will appreciate the new Outline Overlay mode, where path outlines show through the drawing. This is different to the original outline mode, which only shows the path outlines.

Inkscape's team of developers has patched bugs and crashes, and generally improve on version 1.0 in this latest release, version 1.01. You'll find a few features, too, along with translation updates for more than a dozen languages.

Selectors and CSS dialog now available!
Selectors and CSS dialog usage example
The Selectors and CSS dialog that was hidden and labelled as 'experimental' in Inkscape 1.0 is now available from the Object menu in 1.0.1. This new dialog allows users to edit a CSS stylesheet for the document and also to select all objects with a certain CSS selector, providing a replacement for the Selection Sets dialog, that had to be removed for Inkscape 1.0.
Experimental Color-managed PDF export using Scribus
For those of you longing for the day when Inkscape and CMYK are compatible, there's hope on the horizon. Presenting... the experimental Scribus PDF export extension!
It's early days, so there are a few important steps to follow in order to generate that PDF. Make sure you double check the result before sending it to the printer. You'll find this feature as one of the many export formats in the 'Save as' and 'Save a Copy' dialogs. The color managed color selector in the Fill and Stroke dialog has also been fixed, so you can try this new feature out. Leave your feedback about what works / doesn't work in Inkscape's Inbox.
Other colorful features include the following: Color > List All, a new extension that lists all colors used in a document and the Interpolate extension, which now works on gradients in fills and strokes and named colors,
Crash & Bug Fixes
This release is still a "preview" for macOS users, which means that additional improvements are scheduled for the next versions. Linux users will be happy to learn that the snap-packaged version of Inkscape now finds all your installed fonts. Improvements have been made to the zoom correction factor, the document properties dialog and zooming. A number of tools are working better as of version 1.0.1: tweaks to the 3D-box, Eraser and Gradient tools will please users along with those to the Node, Pencil, Selector and Text tools. Many program crashes that plagued Inkscape 1.0 will no longer occur with the latest version.
Clone Original LPE usage example
Certain Live Path Effects (LPEs) are more stable. The Clone original LPE now works with text elements and can better handle transformations, such as moving, stretching and shearing. Extensive fixes were made to the Inkscape Python extensions, allowing them to function properly again after the big overhaul for Inkscape 1.0. Other improvements include tweaks to the Knot LPE , the LPE selection dialog, the Roughen LPE, the Fill between many option, and Inkscape keeps going when selecting an object that is used for the Pattern-Along-Path LPE.

Live Now!
Inkscape is preparing a Summer of Hackfest 2020 Online on Saturdays between July 11 and August 15. That's six Saturdays in a row for a six-hour stretch each time via live video.
Everyone is welcome!
Inkscape contributor Martin Owens
... [More]
, who stepped up to organize and host the event, explained, "We organise a hackfest every year and they are very useful for social bonding and figuring out what we should do as a project, as well as starting some of the more ambitious projects. This year there was no way to host a physical event so we needed to run one online."
Instead of a weeklong in-person event, one day each week is an easier format to manage online.
"The goal is to strengthen existing relationships, make sure different teams and people have a voice, and to attract new people from new places who can learn how to contribute and (learn) who else is involved," said Owens.
In July, meet members of Inkscape's Board of Directors and learn more about the project in general (July 11), dig into user experience priorities through a papercuts hunt (July 18) or participate in more technical discussions, such as a peer code review of merge requests (an ask for new code to be included in the mainline code repository) (July 25).
In August, meet and learn about the Vectors Team and how this group works to promote Inkscape (August 1). Discover how the Google Summer of Code mentors and students are working to improve Inkscape (August 8). Finally, if you've ever wondered how to test and report a bug, here's your chance to learn (August 15)!
Schedule
July 11: Board of Directors - Meet the board with Bryce Harrington - Come talk about Inkscape
July 18: UX - User Experience Priorities with Adam Belis - Papercuts Hunt
July 25: Developers - Technical discussions with Thomas Holder - Peer code review of existing merge requests
Aug. 1: Vectors - Vectors 2.0 with Ryan Gorley
Aug. 8: Mentors - Google summer of Code showcase with Tavmjong Bah
Aug. 15: Testers - Bug Management with Nathan Lee - Test a bug and report back
Sessions will start at 4 pm UTC with an initial presentation of the topic and the outline of the activities or discussion to follow.
Join in Inkscape's Summer of Hackfest 2020 at any point - for a few minutes or a few hours - by clicking here (link goes to the Video Chat Hackfest room). Watch for more news each week.
See you there!
