Winchester, MA  The DuraSpace annual Sponsorship Campaign will kick off in May to raise funds for the DSpace and Fedora projects. This year DuraSpace sponsors may chose to designate funds for either DSpace or Fedora, or to support DuraSpace ... [More] generally. A new Platinum category of sponsorship has been added for members of the community who are DuraSpace Sponsors and want to contribute directly to the Fedora Futures (Fedora Futures blog) project.  Platinum sponsors receive all the benefits of becoming a Gold Sponsor and in addition are represented on the Fedora Advisory Board.  Be on the lookout for more information about how to participate in the coming weeks. If you have any questions please feel free to email Michele Kimpton at [email protected]. What is Fedora Futures? This community initiative began in late 2012 (read more here) and now has nine founding sponsors who are providing funds, developers, and oversight to make significant improvements to the Fedora platform over the next three years. Other DuraSpace Sponsors have joined the effort to offer similar support and form an Advisory Board that will influence the ongoing direction of the work. The Fedora Futures Steering Committee, at the request of sponsors attending the recent DuraSpace Summit (read more here), will be developing a governance model for review and approval by the community. Nine additional Platinum level DuraSpace Sponsor representatives are needed for the Fedora Futures Advisory Board.    What About DSpace Futures? Following a DuraSpace Summit resolution a group of institutional library managers will create the first draft of a vision and high-level roadmap statement to inform the future direction of the DSpace project. At the same time a group of DSpace stakeholders will be working on plans for improving governance and funding.   A REST API panel discussion is planned for the DSpace User Group Meeting at the upcoming Open Repostiories Conference (OR2013). Panelists will discuss their work on integration with third-party tools and applications.  Please contact Jonathan Markow at [email protected] for about participating in Fedora Futures or DSpace Futures. From Rima Kupryte, Director, EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries): Knowledge Without Boundaries Rome, Italy  EIFL has entered Global Giving's (http://www.globalgiving.org) April Challenge to support an innovative library project in Ghana and ... [More] need to raise at least US$5,000 by April 30 (one week away!). Please help us by donating to the project. Through the generous support of our friends and contacts, we have already raised US$3,967 - we need to raise just over US$1,000 by April 30. What's the money for? Poor school children in Ghana are failing exams because they are unable to get hands-on computer experience.  A town library in Ho, Volta Region, has come up with an innovative solution to the problem - a mobile library with solar power that takes fully-charged laptops to schools, benefiting 450 children.  The money we raise will go directly to the library service, and will fund computers, solar panels and internet connections. Find out more at http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/hands-on-computer-classes-for-450-ghana-children/. Donating is easy... Simply go to http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/hands-on-computer-classes-for-450-ghana-children/ and click on the big orange "Donate" button!  Note, for US citizens, donations are tax-deductible.  BONUS DAY You can donate at any time - but on April 24 (tomorrow), GlobalGiving will add a 15% bonus to every donation. So April 24th is a great day to add value to your donation and increase support for the project. Why? If we are successful in raising US$5,000 by April 30th, we will be able to use the GlobalGiving platform in future to support innovative library services, and to contribute to improving lives in many different communities in other countries. From Bram Luyten, @mire Is your institution using the DSpace Manakin XML User interface (XMLUI)? Are you challenged by the XMLUI learning curve? Our free developer bootcamp can give you the kickstart you need. Changing colours, moving around page ... [More] elements and more: we got it covered.                 @mire is hosting a DSpace developer bootcamp on May 28th in Ghent, Belgium. This 6 hour session is being organized as a Pre conference for the annual European Library Automation Group (ELAG) conference. Entirely free of charge, the event is even open to people who are not attending the actual conference. Click here to register. Make sure to select "BC2 - Customizing the DSpace Manakin XML User Interface" from the Pre conference dropdown. Sign up soon, the bootcamp is limited to 30 participants. Is this the right event for you? Bootcamps are active learning events. Therefore, presentations are kept at a minimum and will be aimed at introducing Apache Cocoon and how this framework is exactly implemented in DSpace. You will be able to commit most of your time developing and learning at your own pace, with assistance from coaches and other participants. Together we will touch on technologies including XSLT, JAVA and CSS. Prior experience with any of these is not a formal requirement to enter the bootcamp but will surely help. You will achieve the best results if you think about the specific modifications you would like to implement and questions you want to get answered. We are not planning to cover DSpace Installation. Make sure to install DSpace on your laptop beforehand and bring it with you to the bootcamp. The envisioned outcome of this bootcamp is that you should get a good sense on “what goes where”. The coaches will explore the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches towards customization of DSpace. Coaches Kevin Van de Velde @mire development team lead Kevin has been with @mire since 2007. Together with Mark Diggory, he implemented the first faceted browse and search interface in DSpace called Discovery, based on Apache SOLR. Over the years he worked on more than 30 different implementations of DSpace including the World Bank's Open Knowledge Repository. In September 2011, Kevin joined the ranks of the DSpace Committers. Bram Luyten @mire Co-Founder Bram is responsible for @mire's marketing and sales initiatives. From Heather Morrison, Simon Frasier University Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada The March 31 issue of Dramatic Growth of Open Access features a comparison of open access growth including CC-BY article growth figures supplied by OASPA. In brief: ... [More] for every CC-BY article addition tracked by OASPA, repositories around the world add 359 documents as found by a BASE search, DOAJ adds 10 articles that are not CC-BY licensed (90% of DOAJ article growth), arXiv and SSRN each add 3 documents, and the Internet Archive adds lots of texts, movies, sound recordings and concerts.  Recent research suggests that CC-BY is the preference of a small minority of scholars. Details: http://poeticeconomics.blogspot.ca/2013/04/dramatic-growth-of-open-access-3013.html The top 10 growth figures by percentage for both this quarter and the past year are presented. Looking at percentage growth brings out substantial growth in initiatives with smaller numbers. Note that smaller numbers are not necessarily less significant. One open access funding agency mandate can mean free access to tens or even hundreds of thousands of articles, for example. Open access mandates are high on the list of percentage growth figures, including 26 funding agency OA mandates this quarter for a total of 80 and a growth rate of 48%. The Directory of Open Access Books is growing up leaps and bounds, or to be more specific added 13 publishers and 135 books this quarter. The usual suspects (Directory of Open Access Journals, PubMedCentral, and BASE) continue to rank highly on percentage comparisons. Highwire Press added a total of 20 totally free sites this past year for a total of 71, an impressive sixth place (not bad for an initiative that isn't focused on open access). Kudos to DOAJ for hitting the 1 million article milestone. Bjork, Laakso, Welling and Paetau have issued a preprint of another major open access growth study, the Anatomy of Green Open Access, finding that the coverage of all journals articles as green open access is currently at 12%. Suber has posted additional figures and analysis and updated the open access by the numbers section of the Open Access Directory. New this issue is the amazing 281 billion web pages of the Internet Archive.   [Less]

Winchester, MA In a previous blog post about the recent DuraSpace Sponsor Summit, the outcomes and activities from that meeting were outlined. Specifically, the development of a DSpace ‘vision’ as well as a new governance model. To read the more ... [More] about this work visit: http://duraspace.org/looking-future-dspace-and-fedora.   Below is a brief update on another effort -- the DSpace initiatives that are in the early brainstorming phase on the REST API, DSpace and Hydra and Metadata Improvements.  Thanks to those in the community who participated in the recent calls on each of the three initiatives. The discussions affirmed there is a lot of interest in the community for each of the initiatives.  Here is the link to the notes from the calls: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/DSpace+Futures    We invite everyone in the community to add their feedback in the comments section at the bottom of the respective notes pages. Also, if you have other use cases for a REST API feel free to add them to the use case grid: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/DSpace+Futures+REST+API+Use+Cases.  The next step is to have the individuals or institutions formally identify their willingness to be a part of the initiatives. To do so you may either let us know via email or on the wiki page (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/DSpace+Futures). Each initiative also needs a person from the community to take the lead. To clarify how this will work, we have outlined below the various roles.  ROLES Lead / Co-Leads The initiative "lead" would help to convene regular meetings amongst all interested participants and developers. Help to build consensus around use cases and requirements Strive to keep the initiative moving forward. The role is an "initiative management" role. The individual(s) need not be technical. Steering Committee (optional) Ideally, a committee would be formed to help support the "lead" in the goals of building consensus and ensuring the initiative stays on track. Again, committee members need not be technical, but should have a good grasp of the problem at hand. Developer Team Help to develop, test and release the actual code Communicate directly with the Lead and/or Steering Committee around use cases and requirements Ideally, each developer would have approval from their workplace to spend a percentage of their time on the initiative Ideally, at least one existing DSpace Committer would be on this team. DuraSpace Attend regular meetings and contribute to consensus building  Offer perspective from other initiatives and projects, and help ensure cross-communication between initiatives and with the DSpace Committer Team  Provide necessary infrastructure: conference line, wiki space, JIRA, GitHub, etc. Provide administrative support for any fund raising required Provide and contribute to communication channels for project awareness, status, etc. We look forward to helping the community move these initiatives forward!
