I have been using ClearOS as my network gateway/firewall/print server/samba server for two months or so and it has run smoothly for the whole time.
ClearOS is a Linux server based on CentOS. Until recently it was known as Clark Connect.

The install is as easy as any modern Linux distro, the defaults work well, but everything can be customised if you like.

If you want to run ClearOS as a network gateway, your pc will need two network cards, one as an external interface, one as an internal. It can run as a standard network server with one network card if needed.

ClearOS uses standard Linux software to provide the various services, but of course you can install your own.

A list of the ClearOS software:

Directory Features

* Integrated LDAP for User and Group Management
* User Security Certificate Manager

Network Features

* Multi-WAN
* VPN - PPTP, IPsec, OpenVPN
* DMZ and 1-to-1 NAT
* Stateful Firewall
* Local DHCP and DNS Servers

Gateway Features

* Antimalware - Antivirus, Antiphishing, Antispyware
* Antispam
* Bandwidth Management
* Intrusion Protection, Intrusion Prevention, Intrusion Detection
* Protocol Filtering including Peer-to-Peer Detection
* Content Filter
* Web Proxy
* Access Control

Server Features

* Windows Networking with PDC Support
* File and Print Services
* Flexshares
* Groupware with Outlook Connector
* Mail Server - POP, IMAP, SMTP, Webmail, Retrieval
* Mail Filtering - Antispam, Antimalware, Greylisting, Quarantine
* Mail Archiving
* Database with MySQL
* Web Server with PHP Support

If you need a support contract the Clear Foundation can help but you can of course download ClearOS for free.
This is the easiest to use server distro I have come across. Install, set up, then it sits in the corner without even a monitor pulgged into it.
Give it a try.
